Setting: Scene takes place just before the Klan raids Peidmont in order to rescue Elsie. The Klan gathers before the raid, Benny board his horse in front of all the others, removing his headdress to address the mob. Camera: *Overview of mob, centered on Bennie.* Bennie: *Mounts horse, turns toward fellow Klansmen.* Camera: *Focus on Benny* Bennie: *Removed headdress. Strong, serious expression on his face.* Camera: *Overview of mob again* Mob: *All on horses and in full Klan's dress. Focuses intently on Bennie.* Camera: *Return to focus on Bennie.* Bennie: *Prepares to speak. Says a few words in a calm manner. Says another few words in a much more aggressive manner. Says one last stream of words in an aggrevated, agressive manner, raising his gun to the sky as a general would during a march.* Prompt: "Brothers, today we retrieve what is ours. We must restore this Aryon nation to it's former glory! We shall return to a time before the Great War and restore the Southern Way!" Camera: *Overview of crowd cheering and horses bucking.* Bennie: *Puts headdress back on and rides off.* Mob: *Follows Bennie on horseback.* End Scene Through this little speech scene, I am attempting to portray how Griffith was trying to make the KKK appear as saviors to the South in his film, TBOAN. While Griffith does still make an attempt to convey this point, I tried to make it more obvious in this scene by actually saying what Griffith is thinking. It may be the reason why it would be cut out, as it is very direct in recognizing the KKK as heroes and recognizing the loss of the Southern Way of Life that is never actually said in the film, only portrayed through symbolism.
