2. Catherine believed serfs should have freedom but in 1773 she lost compassion for the serfs when they had a peasant rebellion. She got her army to crush the rebellion and let the nobles treat the serfs as they pleased. She needed the nobles to support her. That caused serfs to have no more freedom and they had less rights compared to other serfs in Europe
