Reflection and Song of the Week Okay, this is the part we were all waiting for. The Song of the Week is “Backseat Freestyle” by Kendrick Lamar. Start by finding a quiet place. Take some slow deep breaths, relax, and now you are ready. He opens the song with the lines “Martin had a dream/Martin had a dream/Kendrick have a dream”. What is your dream? What do you wish to accomplish tonight, this week, this season? What tools do you have to help you achieve this dream? What can you do tonight to bring you closer to fulfilling your dream? At the end of the first verse and into the hook and bridge, we have a lot to decode. At the end of the first verse, Kendrick says “All you pussies is losers, all my niggas is winners”. How is this relevant to us? Who are the losers going to be tonight (remember to be respectful)? What can you do tonight to show that all your “niggas is winners”? How can you help their cause while they help you? We are a team, and we have each other’s backs. How will we show each other that we can do this? In the hook, Kendrick says…everything in those four lines is important. All his life, he wanted money and power. Tonight you will have a chance to show everyone your power. Maybe there is something you know you can do, but your team doesn’t know. Will you step up tonight? Will you be the standout not only to the other team but to your team? When that moment comes, will you be the one to take charge and lead the team? Most men pray that they get big dicks, but Kendrick wants his to be as big as the Eiffel Tower. He’s letting himself reach, beyond what is standard, into the extraordinary. How is your “normal” dream extraordinary? How are you extraordinary? The bridge is probably what sticks out to most people who have heard the song for the first time. The lines “Goddamn I got bitches, damn I got bitches…” pop out right away. Not only is it the stereotypical line in a rap song in which the rapper brags about his women, it stretches to a whole new level: “wifey, girlfriend, and mistress.” Normally, we expect one of the three, but Kendrick has all three. He takes something ordinary and pushes it further. How can you do that tonight? We all want women in our lives in one way or another as friends, lovers, etc. What do you have to do to get bitches? Never forget that Chicks Dig Elo. Tonight, how will your actions help you acquire Elo to potentially get girls? If Elo isn’t relevant, what do you have to do to get the girl of your dreams? Do you need to talk to her or maybe you already know her and all you have to do is ask? What is holding you back? Let these things go and let yourself fly with nothing holding you back. The second verse has the lines “and her body got that ass that a ruler couldn’t measure/ and it make me cum fast but I never get embarrassed” relates very much with the bridge. Kendrick describes a woman as having “that ass that a ruler couldn’t measure.” For most men, wholesome buttocks is regarded as attractive and is considered as a standard of attractiveness (girl betta have dat rack or dat ass). Where will you set your standards tonight? How will you show everyone the standards you have set for yourself? If you make a mistake (hopefully not cuming fast in the game), will let yourself be too embarrassed or will you acknowledge your mistake and move forward? Good luck tonight, be respectful, play your best, trust your team.
