In the novel “Night” by Elie Wiesel the protagonist Eliezer changed drastically in his physical, emotional, and faithful state throughout the novel. Eliezer experiences a wide range of physical pain and suffering, along with coming and going relationships with other detainees in the concentration camp; as well as revelations in his own religious faith. Around 60 pages into “Night” a horrifying experience occurs amongst Eliezer, related to the pipel. The pipel was a young boy with a lot of innocence to go around for everyone. Then the night came where the gallows dropped, and then; Eliezer stood there watching amongst thousands of other spectators. The young pipel’s head, rung in the gallows. "To hang a young boy in front of thousands of spectators was no light matter. The head of the camp read the verdict. All eyes were on the child. He was lividly pale, almost calm, biting his lips. The gallows threw its shadow over him"(61). What affect does this have on Eliezer? The young pipel was mere an acquaintance of Eliezer he grew fond of. But what did the toll on him the hardest? Was it the death of an innocent child with no criminal acts reddening his hands? Or was it him asking. “Where is God now? Where is He?” Eliezer Wiesel, of course felt horrible for watching a child die for something he would not or could not understand. His mind and his soul were aching and poisoned by this event. Then he began to ask himself. “Should I continue to believe and have faith in Him?” God, he is contemplating his own faith in God. And that, is how Eliezer Wiesel was affected and changed by the end of “Night”.
