What is it that people like about PvM? For the most part, PvM in this game is not really *that* interesting, and even the most complicated bosses eventually get sussed out, after which people know the most efficient way to kill them and they too become yet another repetitive task. So what is it? Well I think it’s the same reason that people—despite complaining all day about them— still do clues. It is also the same reason that as I’m writing this my character is casually chipping away at a black dragon’s HP bar, more than content with the low income and poor ranged XP rates that are to be had in a dungeon that somewhere, is hiding an unimaginably large stash of raw chicken. How much raw chicken has actually been used on that shrine since the game’s release? There’s a random curiosity that I wouldn’t mind knowing the answer to. This is not actually my main suggestion, but would it be possible to display lots of random statistics in various places on this game? I would love to see things like how much GP the Al-Kharid toll gate has taken in its lifetime. Just a thought. But back to the topic at hand… My answer to the question I posed right at the start is this: these things come with the potential for great reward. Even if it may take an average of 2000 level three clues to get a piece of third-age, and the fact that most people will never even see a pair of third-age vambraces, the allure of that possibility keeps people trying. Likewise, I don’t mind spending my time at black dragons because there is a 1 in ~10k chance of a draconic visage and it adds that little extra bit of suspense, or rather, surprise when/if it comes. So what is my suggestion? Rare skilling events. Obviously PvM comes with more risk (mostly due to disconnections, unfortunately), so due to the concept of risk vs reward it will be more rewarding that skilling, but I do think that skills could use some form of mechanic like this. I’ll list a few examples, but really, this is such a broad concept that could be used in so many ways.
