chances are, this went into pre production over a year before upside down did.

there was an interview with the creator on the topic.
basically he said once he found out hollywood was doing basically the same thing, he covered up a poster he got sent (for upside down) as not to get any sort of influence.


TL;DR, Patema came first, but it was likely a coincidence that both movies had the same story, if anything can be argued, upside down would have had to copy patema
